Call for Papers – Historical perspectives on (sexualised) violence in educational contexts

Interim conference of the Division for Historical Educational Research

  • Venue: University of Hildesheim
  • Date: 7–9 October 2026
  • Organisers: Meike Sophia Baader, Edith Glaser, Elke Kleinau
  • Deadline for abstracts: 28th February 2026

(Educational) historical contexts are repeatedly touched upon and sometimes even take centre stage because they are relevant to the reappraisal of experiences of violence in educational relationships and institutions. At the same time, reappraisal emphasises the rights and perspectives of those affected and thus the incompleteness of any reappraisal process. This frames the historical perspective with regard to the consequences for those affected and the current responsibility of educational – but also psychological, religious and legal – institutions and organisations.

The conference aims to broaden the temporal focus of historical research on (sexualised) violence and, at the same time, to deepen (educational) historical perspectives in relation to previous research on coming to terms with the past. Contributions should refer to the historical period from the 18th century to the present day, so that violence is understood here as a particular “constellation of modernity” (Reemtsma 2013).
